Students crave feedback from their professors. They like to get comments, suggestions, and praise for their work. Even a small note written next to their letter grade has a big effect on their feelings about the course and their confidence. But professors are very busy and writing feedback for every student in a large class may seem impossible. Here are some easy ideas that do not take much time, but they can be very effective for encouraging your students and getting higher course evaluation ratings.
1. Praise in public, criticize in private. After an assignment has been evaluated, recognize some of the exceptional work from particular students; they will be happy and their works can serve as models for other students. If there is a problem or wrong answer that many students share, then make a general criticism, such as, “It seems that the lecture about this topic was not well understood, as many missed this question. Let me explain further…”
2. Compliment sandwich: give the student a positive thought, then some constructive criticism, then another positive thought. For example: “You did a great job structuring your paper. The use of appropriate sources is not enough yet, but can be improved. Very clever title!”
3. Use a simple template on essays, reports, or long answer test questions. Just give feedback about three of four aspects: use of references, organization and structure, quality of writing, and quality of argument. Three sentences and you are done!
4. A little hand written mark on the papers is always appreciated. Just write “Great idea!” or “Excellent use of source” next to the student’s text in blue or green ink. Add a smiley face (J)☺ or small picture; it works whether they are 7 year old students or 20’s college students!
